I was scanning headlines and one caught my eye, I’m not sure what the gist of the story was, but the headline itself made me think. It was something Hillary Clinton said, Voters blame Bush for Iraq. I’m pretty sure what I could imagine the story to say, but here’s what it made me think.
What do you want in a leader? Do you really want someone who voted for the war in Iraq and now speaks loudly against it, or just says we need a timetable for withdraw? What kind of leadership is that? A leader makes the decision he/she thinks is best and sticks to that decision no matter if it’s popular or not. Yes there is room for someone to have a change of heart, yes we can second guess the reasons why we went, but it is irresponsible to now suddenly say. “It’s too hard” and just give up... We used to have basic values that said, if you start something, finish it. These days, it’s if it’s too hard, pull out. No one really likes war, and it is sad to see the soldiers die, by the way they know there is this possibility when they join the military, so let’s cut the bull about sending our KIDS into harms way. I keep hearing the dems and war protesters saying “support the troops... bring them home” I agree bring them home, when they have finished their mission. I’ve heard many soldiers or family members of soldiers say “Don’t say you support the troops if you don’t support the mission” It just can’t work that way... We’ve gotten ourselves into Iraq, like it or not, agree with us being there or not, we are there and we must finish what we started... We can’t keep quitting when it gets hard, we will lose our way of life if we just cower in the corner and ignore the real threats that are out there... Do you want a leader that tells us we must be quitters? Whether they voted for the war or not, we as a nation, must keep our commitments or we can’t be considered trustworthy. Just a quick look on the flip side, what kind of leader says they want something (like withdraw from Iraq) and then won’t back it up... Congress has the power to cut the funding for the war, they could cut it now and demand the immediate withdraw. Why don’t they do that? Because they know it’s the wrong thing to do, they are just using it as an issue for political gain, a practice which is just plain wrong. I want a leader that makes a decision, sticks to it, tries to right any wrongs, but just doesn’t quit because the going gets tough.. One who is more concerned with doing the right thing than what the polls tell them to do. Hopefully I will find that leader soon and hopefully that leader will be the next President.
