There is a new crisis rising in the nation, well maybe it's not new, I've heard the complaint for a while, but it seems to be a hot topic right now. Talk Radio is too conservative. Lets just see, why would this be, I know it must be a massive conservative rich guy conspiracy. Or maybe it's market demand.... Rush Limbaugh doesn't get tons of money because all the radio stations are conspiring to make him rich and make him the mouthpiece for the nation, they are airing him and paying him so much because he gets massive ratings (lots of listeners). If he suddenly lost 90% of his audience they'd kick him to the curb. There have been many attempts at getting "progressive" radio out there. Air America struggles, why? They aren't getting the listeners. The market decides success or failure. Well I guess the answer may be legislation, yeah the politicians always know best don't they? Here's a couple links that try to explain the first one they absolutely refuse to acknowledge that free market (one of the pillars of a free country) is working, there must be limits on who can own what and how much. read here
The second link is from a "conservative" talk show and is second hand info, I can't say that it's fact and hesitated to bring it up, but at last I decided, I'll share it and let you decide. Listen
We do not need regulations to control radio's political content. They will air what people listen to, because the advertisers will pay to support things that people are listening to.

AirAmerica's content is just poor. For one, it isn't a news and/or commentary station that happens to pick up another show, like Rush's. They are dedicated content stations, which puts them at a disadvantage immediately. But they did that to themselves. They were recently reorganized and relaunched too.
But on the content note...AirAmerica is crazy-left-wing like progressives would rightly accuse Rush of being crazy-right-wing, and as Rush is justified in calling them crazy-left-wing. I think that most Democrats and independents are progressive in their political ideals, while being moderate in their politics. And therefore shows like those on AirAmerica just really aren't appealing to most progressives (but neither is Rush), and certainly aren't going to be appealing to anyone leaning towards the GOP.
Frankly there is much more a mob mentality with those who consider themselves conservative or Republican. Progressives have a lot more political diversity in them, and it is pretty divisive! Thus a few big media shows aren't going to be draws in the first place, as they are with shows like Sean Hannity's, or Rush's, or FoxNews...hence those stations and shows have huge audiences (and thus make tons of $$$ in advertising).
I wouldn't know much about Air America, I just know if the content was appealing to enough radio listeners, the stations would air it. My preference is Glenn Beck. More concerned with using common sense rather than supporting any party. I would disagree with the mob mentality, rather a common belief in certain values. The problem is there are those in the republican party who only represent those values in name, there are democrats that represent these things better, or at least in some issues. I consider myself a Christian first, a conservative after that, and these days a republican farther down the list. Simply more people do find conservative radio more appealing, even those who don't agree with them. My issue is we certainly do not need the "Government" stepping in and saying what content needs to be allowed on the air.
I think that the content is really geared for those who are antithesis of Sean Hannity. So, it is crazy polar left much of time, though not all.
But honestly that isn't very appealing to people who are politically progressive. It is only attractive to die-hard, true-believer Democrats...which in reality is a NOT at all a majority of progressives.
By 'mob mentality' that you disagreed with, I'm pointing out that conservatives more often than not believe in a platform of ideals, which is generally not the case with progressives. Progressives you tend to get a potpourri of ideals. Which is why you find that while the 'official' Democrat Party platform is pro-choice, and thus generally pro-abortion...that progressives as a majority are generally anti-abortion and pro-adoption.
This issue is going to come to an ugly head with Hillary Clinton running for President. True-believer Democrats are ga-ga for her. But liberals and progressive types are not. It is clearly going to split the party up with her tactics, and the Democratic Party is turning a blind eye to things that they should notice....such as the GOP's funneling money to Hillary's campaign through 3rd party donations. If Hillary is one the ticket as Democrat...then the Republican candidate WILL win....simple as that. She is a awful choice, and everyone but the true-believer Dems know it. Just as an example.
